Every team has a “gap.” It’s that challenging space where energy wanes, momentum stalls, and frustration begins to creep in. But what if I told you that the gap is where the real magic happens?
In the world of work there are six areas that work flows through;
Wonder – Invention – Discernment – Galvanizing – Enablement – Tenacity
Here’s where the gap comes in: for many teams, the work doesn’t flow seamlessly from one Genius to the next. There can be a point in the process where energy dips because the Genius required isn’t naturally presenting the team. That gap can feel like a problem—but it’s actually an opportunity for growth, collaboration, and innovation.
To work effectively in the gap, teams must first recognize it. It’s not a flaw in the team or a sign of failure—it’s simply the nature of working with people who bring diverse geniuses. Awareness is the first step. Once a team identifies their gaps, they can adapt by leaning on others’ Geniuses, refining their processes to fill the void and creating space to invest in the gap.
For example, if your team excels at brainstorming and rallying others (Invention and Galvanizing) but struggles to follow through on implementation (Tenacity), that gap can derail completion of projects if it’s ignored. But when acknowledged, it becomes an intentional space where the team can recruit individuals with Tenacity, adjust timelines, or implement accountability systems to bridge the gap. Another example is the team that excels at implementing projects, but has a gap of Wonder and Invention. This team would be wise to schedule monthly WI meetings with the intent to ask the right questions about a certain topic (preferably only one topic).
The gap is where humility and connection thrive. It reminds us that no one has all the answers, that no leader or team member is supposed to carry every phase of the work. It requires trust, communication, and the willingness to ask for help.
Ultimately, thriving teams don’t avoid the gap—they embrace it. They understand that by honoring each person’s Geniuses and addressing the gaps together, they can achieve far more than any one individual ever could.
So, where’s the gap in your team’s workflow? Lean into it, work through it, and watch your team grow stronger because of it. The gap isn’t the end of momentum—it’s the beginning of transformation.
